Saturday March 4th live from the BARCLAY’S CENTRE in BROOKLYN NEWYORK brings us a Welterweight Unification fight between two Undefeated Champions.
Keith “ONE TIME ” Thurman (27-0-0, 22 KOs) puts his WBA WELTERWEIGHT TITLE on the line verses 2 weight World Champion and current WBC WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION Danny “SWIFT” Garcia (33-0-0, 19 KOs) in what promises to be one of the best and most evenly matched bouts of the year.
Both men have been on a collision course since Garcia moved up to 147 pounds, after wiping out and dominating the 140 pound division. Danny is a slight underdog but has been the underdog before and that lable seem’s to do him good, he knocked out Amir Khan in a few round’s as a underdog and also handed Lucas Mattysse his first loss as a underdog too, this is nothing new to the philly man.
Keith has still some questions to answer to fans and critics as he has not yet had the big name fights to stake his claim as a leading force in boxing , his ko ratio has dwindled slightly since he has stepped up the competition his Monarch One Time has some what become Sometime .
He faced Showtime Shawn Porter in one of the best fights of 2016 which saw Thurman win a close decision over his former friend. Although Porter’s style was a perfect fit for Thurman to shine he didn’t quite dominate although the favourite going in.
Which makes Saturdays fight all the more interesting both guys are in their prime and at the peak of their powers this is a must see fight between two guys who are 28 years old, undefeated, both are Champions and both elite fighters with ko power capable of ending the fight at any moment.
With two belts on the line the winner most likely becomes the leading guy at Welterweight and fills the void left since the P4P king Floyd Mayweather retired. This will be a battle of two great young minds, Garcia is much better than he gets credit for and a terrific counterpuncher and fundementally sound boxer who packs a punch.
Keith is a little faster on his feet and a little more versitile but can be a little wider with his shots and has shown a tendency to search the ko while leaving himself vulnerable for punishment.
This really is a toss up and as evenly matched fight as you could see, my prediction for this one is Danny Garcia pulling of the upset and getting a close decision victory, he is a proven winner and has faced much superior competition and faced every style and still came out on top. Keith could out work Garcia or catch him that can’t be ruled out, but I’m rolling with Garcia as he has shown me more at the top level for the last 5 years.
So tune in Saturday night for what promises to be a fight of the year contender. Lets hope the winner can face the Kell Brook vs Errol Spence winner later in the fall for 3 belts and give us some clarity as to who is the best Welterweight in the world today, what a fight that would be……
