This years Mexican blockbuster fight has settled on a catch weight. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will be at a max weight limit of 164.5 pounds.
This makes the match more interesting due to Chavez Jr.’s most recent bout weights and weight discipline issues. Chavez Jr. Most recent televised fight, Chavez Jr. lost to Andrzej Fonfara as a light heavyweight. Last time JCC Jr. was in the ring he was weighing 168 lbs.
Canelo also has been criticized over weight issues when it comes to fights. Canelo has been known to pick smaller weight class opponents and make them come up in weight in order to face him. This led to many to believe he is afraid to face someone bigger and around his natural size, Mr. GGG.
This weight settlement should prove a lot depending whom is declared the winner. Canelo can show a bigger foe has no meaning to who accepts his challenges. Chavez Jr. can show discipline is no longer an issue when it comes to weighing in.
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34KOs) vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32KOs) will take place “Cinco De Mayo” weekend May 6, 2017. The bout will be at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
I had been personally waiting for Canelo vs Chavez Jr. since 2009 right around the same time everyone was hooting and hollering for Mayweather to face Pacquiao. This match will definitely rack in a lot of cash and viewers worldwide making it a blockbuster for 2017.
